Mule Kick

Homemade fresh gingerade with lime juice – sugar – chilled vodka – this is a serious wakeup call for taste buds. This drink will give you a punch of fortitude. Kick it!

  • 1 pound of fresh ginger root
  • 4 limes
  • 1 1/4 C sugar
  • 2 C or more water
  • food processor
  • strainer

Roughly peel the ginger and cut into thick slices (you don’t have to get every single bit of peel). Food process the ginger with 1 C water for 3 minutes. Press the ginger and its liquid into a strainer over a container to capture all the liquid. Put the pulp in the processor again and repeat by adding another cup of water to it and again processing. Press through the strainer and capture the liquid. The purpose here is to pull as much flavor and kick of the ginger via its pulp and strain the liquid out.

Squeeze all 4 limes into the ginger pulp (cut in half, dig in those nails). At this point you should have close to 3 C of liquid. Add the sugar and more water if the bite is too strong. Stir and chill well. Add a couple shots of vodka or dark rum and serve over a few cubes of ice in a copper mug for a refreshing beverage.

The benefits of ginger are undisputed. It’s a well-known reliever of gastrointestinal symptoms, motion and pregnancy sickness. You don’t have to add alcohol to enjoy a great drink!
